Maybe you want to own your own home. Many of us do!

But today we are focusing on the reasons it is absolutely essential to own your home instead of renting, and why you need to make it happen now.

If you are currently renting and think that suits you just fine, stop….. read this, and then see if you change your mind.

1: Stability

Did you know that your ability to be happy- or at the minimum content in life- depends largely on your feelings of security? Knowing that you will have a roof over your head and where you will be and feel safe.

Rental properties do come with a level of uncertainty, even with long-term leases. You have regular inspections, and if things aren’t up to scratch you can be asked to leave. Rental prices can go up without warning, meaning the beautiful home you live in is no longer affordable for you. The house could be sold, and you could be asked to vacate.

Then comes that ordeal of trying to find a suitable replacement rental in a decent area, within your price range, and battling all the other people applying for the same property. No doubt about it, renting can be stressful.

2: Make it your own

One of the wonderful things about owning your own home is that you can make it yours- colours, updates, decorations… If you want a fire red feature wall there’s nobody stopping you (except maybe your wife… hmm maybe check with her before you get out that paintbrush.

You won’t have to worry about little things like hanging pictures on walls with hooks, and you can renovate as you see fit. This isn’t just a house, it should be your sanctuary, your harbour in the storm, and a reflection of who you are and what (and who) you love.

3: Neighbours/community

The hard part about renting and being forced to move around is that you don’t have a chance to form real genuine bonds with your neighbours and really feel like part of the community in the same way as you would if you knew you would be living there for 10, 20, 50 years.

Being able to trust that a neighbour will keep an eye on your place when you are away travelling, or take your bins out for you if you forget, or watch the kids in an emergency isn’t something to take for granted, and having friends nearby can make all the difference when it’s been a big week and you just need someone to crack open a bottle of wine with and vent.

4: Stable schools/work

Living near where you work and being able to keep the kids in schools nearby means not only that you won’t be commuting and spending long periods of time in the car, but that you can often take more healthy and cost-saving approaches to travel such as walking or cycling to work or school.

5: Equity

Last but not least, owning your own home means you will have equity to use in purchasing investments homes to generate passive income in your retirement, or a home paid off so you won’t be stressing about paying the rent each week in your older years, you can just enjoy where you live with little expense.
